Statement by Iceland

Mr. President,
Iceland welcomes the delegation of Suriname and its national report.
In the spirit of constructive engagement, Iceland recommends the following:

1. Ratify the Second Optional Protocol to the ICCPR.

2. Strengthen existing legal and policy frameworks to prevent and respond to gender-based violence.

3. Amend the Violence and Sexual Harassment Act to ensure equal protection for all workers, including public servants.

4. Decriminalize abortion in all circumstances and remove legal, administrative and practical barriers to accessing safe abortion services.

5. Ensure access to comprehensive sexuality education in and out of school settings.

6. Adopt comprehensive anti-discrimination legislation that explicitly prohibits discrimination against persons of diverse SOGIESC.

7. Ensure the legal recognition of same-sex couples.
